Verdict in for HIV Positive Singer Nadja Benaissa

The verdict is in for singer Nadja Benaissa. A German court found her guilty on the charge that she infected a partner with HIV, after knowingly having unprotected intercourse with her ex-boyfriend in spite of her HIV positive status. Her ex-boyfriend was not aware that she was carrying the virus.
Benaissa will not serve time in jail for her conviction. According to the Associated Press, she has been given a two-year suspended sentence and 300 hours of community service. Both the prosecutor and the defense attorney are pleased with the outcome.
Prosecutor Peter Liesenfeld said that given that the acts were committed when the singer was still quite young, and in the midst of a “turbulent” life, the suspended sentence is appropriate.
Defense attorney, Oliver Wallasch, is happy that Benaissa was able to avoid jail time. He also said that his client had stated that any type of community service that would be imposed upon her would be “justified.”
